Planning pallet racking with META MULTIPAL: basics & dimensions
A pallet rack stands or falls on proper planning: load units, loads and safety clearances all have to fit together. With META MULTIPAL you plan heavy-duty storage systematically – these are the fundamentals you should know.

Defining the load unit
It all starts with the pallet: Euro pallet (800 × 1,200 mm), industrial pallet (1,000 × 1,200 mm) or mesh box. Weight, external dimensions and load overhang determine the beam length, the compartment height and the number of pallet positions per bay.
- Euro pallet: 800 × 1,200 mm, usually stored crosswise
- Industrial pallet: 1,000 × 1,200 mm
- Mesh box: allow for extra height and weight
Shelf load and bay load
The shelf load is the capacity of one pair of beams (one level); the bay load is the sum of all levels between two frames. Both values depend on beam profile, span and frame height and must never be exceeded.
Always plan with the heaviest pallet you expect plus a buffer – heavy-duty storage does not forgive overloading.
Heights and safety clearances
The compartment height results from the pallet height plus the load plus a safety clearance for loading and retrieval. A gap is needed between the top of the load and the next beam so the forklift can set the pallet down safely.
Stability and impact protection
Pallet racking is anchored to the floor and – depending on the height-to-depth ratio – braced with frame connectors. Impact protection on the corner uprights and pallet stops protect the structure and goods from forklift damage.

Don't forget the labelling
Every racking installation needs a clearly visible load sign showing shelf and bay load. It is a prerequisite for safe operation and part of the later rack inspection.
